Lorde - Tennis Court EP Track By Track Review

Out of seemingly nowhere, singer/songwriter Lorde has caused huge waves on the music scene this month with her new EP 'Tennis Court'. The collection quickly became a commercial hit in Lordes' native New Zealand and it's now even beginning to have an impact on the US charts. Quite impressive for a 16 year old girl who's done next to no promotion stateside. Read on to hear a track by track review of each song on the EP to see what all the fuss is about.

Tennis Court

With its swirling synths and bizarre computer game noises, you'd be forgiven for thinking that 'Tennis Court' is too alternative for the mainstream but the chorus is insanely addictive and the repeated "yeahs'" stay in your head for days. The official video is another matter entirely though. You'll either be entranced by the haunting image of Lorde staring out at you or you'll think it's the most boring and pointless promo you've ever seen. Make up your own mind by clicking below.

"Because I'm doing this for the thrill of it, killing it.
Never not chasing the million things I want."

Swingin Party

The second track from the 'Tennis Court' EP is a more chilled out affair than the lead single. It's sound reminds me of Lana Del Rey somewhat, if she were a 16 year old recovering from her first hang over. This is currently my least favourite song on the EP, although I think it also has the most potential to grow on the listener.

"Bring your own lampshade, somewhere there's a party.
Here it's never ending, can't remember when it started."

Biting Down

'Biting Down' has an eerie vibe that builds and builds in intensity as extra layers are added instrumentally and the repeated refrain of the chorus line sounds more disturbing the more it's repeated. Songs like this mark Lorde out as a unique talent to watch rather than just another Florence clone.

"Skip a hit, don't make a sound.
It feels better biting down."

Bravado

'Bravado' contains the EP's most impressive vocal performance, showing off Lorde's range and intensity with epic backing vocals that add to the gravity of the track. The song has an empowering message that's not thrown in your face like more poppier hits such as 'Fighter' or 'Hero'.

"I can tell you that when the lights come on I'll be ready for this."

I am officially obsessed with this EP and cannot wait to hear more from Lorde. Her first album is rumoured to be out this September but if you can't wait that long, I recommend you google another video doing the rounds called 'Royals', which could be Lorde's best song yet.

So what do you think of Lorde's music? Is she the next big thing or just another singer/songwriter trying to be weird for the sake of it? And what's your favourite track on the 'Tennis Court' EP? Let me know what you think by commenting, liking and sharing below.
