MTV VMA 2012. Best Hip-Hop Video: Who should win?

This award arrived in the 1999 VMAs and according to MTV, was initally planned to be for  hip-hop-inspired songs, not necessarily actual hip-hop music videos. In 2007, MTV retired the awards for best B&B, Rap and Hip-hop, only to bring them back the following year combined into one award, for best Hip-Hop. Outkast, Eminem and Missy Elliott have all won this award twice.

Best Hip-Hop Video, here are the nominations:

  • Childish Gambino - 'Hearbeat'

  • Drake Ft. Lil Wayne - 'HYFR'

  • Jay-Z and Kanye West - 'Paris'

  • Nicki Minaj - 'Beez in the trap'

  • Kanye West Ft. Pusha T, Big Sean and 2 Chainz - 'Mercy'

who will win: Nicki Minaj - 'Beez in the trap'

Last years winner is likely to repeat this year, with a pretty standard rap video. Much of Minajs' initial quirkiness is now missing from her later videos and I personally found the almost relentless editing in this cut over bearing. I do like the barbed wire bit though.

who should win: Jay-Z and Kanye West - 'Paris'

This twist on a simple perfamcnce video is very innovative, I love the kaleidoscope effect throwing in random shapes, flashing lights, signs from the songs, lions, panthers and the Notre Dame as well as clips from the film 'Blades of Glory', which it samples.

who should have been nominated:Azealia Banks Ft. Lazy Jay - '212'

Azealia banks debut made a big impact when it arrived earlier this year. With a simple black and white video, Azealia energetic perfomance is all thats needed, Oh, and a Micky Mouse jumper.

What do you think? Agree or disagree? Or have I forgotten someone who should have been nominated?

  1. Azealia is a cool choice, just wish Missy was out at the moment to grab it for a third time.
